about this show

The Artist - Badcock's Gallery David Briggs has exhibited with Badcocks Gallery since 2001 in mixed shows; this is his first solo exhibition with us.

The BIGGER PICTURE is an excellent venue for David’s work as the larger pieces can be fully appreciated in a more spacious environment. The exhibition sees a mixed collection of paintings on paper and canvas.

The works on paper are colourful compositions that consist of minimal line, elements of constructed landscapes, fragments of memory, hinting at shapes and forms.
There is a subterranean feel to the works on canvas, the warmth and the depth of the rich reds and oranges alluding to heat and volcanic power. Paintings like ‘the Power Below’ and ‘Pushing through the Earth’ are energetic and highly charged.

Artist Statement:

Much of the work shown in this exhibition has been produced over the past few months after returning from a five-week tour of France and Spain. This body of work, particularly the larger canvases, are a celebration of paint and composition; they flowed quickly and with great spontaneity, their immediacy and freshness being retained.

The works on paper explore the relationship of geometric form and colour within a composition. Each painting took many hours, before I felt it was finally resolved. I feel this struggle shows through in the finished work.
