Hannah Davies

Hannah Davies was born in Cambridge in 1980 and graduated from Falmouth College of Art in 2002.

Although she is a young artist, Badcocks were so impressed with her exceptional talent when they spotted her work at the 2002-degree show that they invited her to exhibit with them in the Bigger Picture. A daunting task for the more experienced artist, however Hannah has taken this challenge in her stride and produced an exceptional body of work.

Hannah explores the surface of the window in which interiors are projected onto the reflected landscape, a place where there becomes a dialogue between what is private and what is public, the casual observer becomes the voyeur.

Working with oils, her subjects have a duality on the canvas, the boundaries between interior and exterior become blurred. The object, shadow and reflection create mysterious forms and ghostly atmospheres. But these are not still; again there is juxtaposition between the quiet qualities of her subject and a tremendous energy in her brushwork representing the refraction of dappling sunlight on glass. “On a glass surface inside and outside are merged, mixing two different atmospheres and producing strange images of coffee cups floating in landscapes”.
