Marie-Claire Hamon

Last year, Badcocks exhibited Marie Claire’s sensitive paintings in a successful three man show in our smaller gallery on the Strand. This year, we are thrilled to be able to show her work in the BIGGER PICTURE, where these beguiling paintings can be seen in a light and spacious environment that allows the viewer to fully appreciate the subtleties and complexities of her work.

Artist Statement

I draw my inspiration from emotional instants that touch our humanity. To do so, I often use familiar objects which are part of our every day life as they carry a lot of memory and personal triggers. I seek to convey a feeling of nostalgic optimism, a suspended moment in time, a place charged with recent events, as if still inhabited by the ghost of the departed and awaiting the future. This reflects the process of painting, as it captures the moment and sets it in history while awaiting the interpretation of the viewer.
My paintings are usually executed over a long period of time, as the process is an integral part of my practice, establishing a dialogue between the accident and the intention as they both journey side by side towards an end image.
My studio is situated in the beautiful fishing village of Porthleven. It overlooks the harbour. My colours are influenced by the environment that surrounds the studio and the strong light that reflects from the harbour water and wall and then filters through the window into the studio.
I like to mix in a dichotomy of concerns both the huge anxieties of time with the beauty of everyday life. I wish to offer the viewer a meditative type of work which will both attract and challenge.
