He was educated in Dorset and later at Penzance Grammar School. After a diverse and colourful childhood spent in West Penwith, in 1969 he went to University in Leicestershire where he studied biology. He did not complete his course and decided to travel.
Various careers followed until in 1988 he decided to follow his urge to paint.
This is his second solo show after a successful debut exhibition at the Rainyday Gallery last year in which over half the work was sold.
Matthew's paintings are energetic, using a variety of media and sweeping colours; many of the titles draw their influence from mythology. The images he creates through their content and application inspires a unique reaction in the viewer.
During this exhibition he will also be showing some of his sculptural work constructed from found objects, witty in essence they reflect Matthew's wry outlook on life.
Matthew feels a very real direct intimacy with the locality in which he works and is able to provoke an instant engagement with a passionate directness to the viewer; his style is abstract whilst conveying a link to its inceptive origins.
For art lovers and collectors alike this is an essential exhibition. On display will be some of Matthews most dynamic works yet.
