about andrew litten

Andrew prefers not to be drawn into talking about his painting, neither his techniques nor the finished work.

His work is all about emotion.

During the painting process the emotional exploration outweighs the visual one in importance. It is interesting that the artist denies himself the basic tool of good light in order to hone his other senses when painting. This heightened atmosphere allows Andrew to let his feelings be the guiding force. The finished work asks the viewer to respond to what they feel rather than what they see.

And the end results are highly charged…a naked figure gazes out from the painting, fixing you with a knowing yet vulnerable stare, in ‘weeping in two languages’ two agitated heads loom upwards at a disturbing angle. Francis Bacon springs to mind in some of his works but this is not to say that the work is derivative, indeed it is refreshing to see a young artist in Cornwall following his own unique path. There is also plenty of humour and joy in Andrew’s work. His mad, careering horse cannot fail to raise a smile in any viewer and who can resist a nervous snigger at his red-cloaked flasher?
