Maggie Matthews work is derived from elements which place her within a rich and colourful context, that of landscape and modernist abstraction. Cornwall's wild landscape has been a draw and an inspiration for her, as well as for generations of national and international artists before her.

Maggie is a contemporary painter with an exceptional eye for composition and colour, her enquiry into painting continues this legacy of place. Her work is often derived directly from the landscape, she works quickly through drawing, capturing the essence of a place within an excited myriad of line and tone.

Maggie writes:

" ......the land itself has been reduced to islands of form, hanging in space. I walk on the cliffs, find a sheltered spot and spend the day sketching, arranging the scene until something excites me......my colours are not naturalistic or symbolic, simply intuitive......back at the studio I pull out the compositions and paint them over and over until there's a point where it works."
