Badcocks first encountered Lindsay Simons at the‘Fresh Art’ fair in London last year and were immediately seduced by her beautiful paintings. As well as being an artist of obvious wit and humour, Lindsay’s work is a juxtaposition of old and new, a wry statement about women’s roles. She shows how they have been traditionally viewed as objects of beauty but sets them against the mundanity of modern domesticity. The results are paintings of exquisite craftsmanship which exude great warmth and intelligence. |
Artist statement My painting process begins with the selection of images from ’old master painting’ such as Vermeer, Raphael and Ingres. For me, these images represent aesthetic icons of beauty, which are recreated faithfully in the style of these great painters. The images are juxtaposed with strange surfaces which are a reference my dual identity as an artist and also a home maker and mother. The surfaces are created from the dust and detritus of the home and by using these materials, I aim to question the nature of work and value. |
