about mary stork

The Artist - Badcock's Gallery ‘A good picture continues to breathe and vibrate with energy’ says Mary and this couldn’t be truer of her current body of work.

Mary was the first artist to exhibit in a solo show at Badcock’s, and now just after our three-year anniversary, we are delighted to welcome her back.

An internationally acclaimed artist, Mary’s artistic training at Bristol and the Slade was under the august direction of eminent members of the art community such as Paul Feiler, Ernest Pascoe, Frank Auerbach and William Coldstream. During her time at the Slade (1959-61) she was constantly exposed to the work and interpretation of work of renowned artists such as these.

She moved to West Penwith in 1961.Whilst Mary was raising her three children her work was put on hold, but she returned to painting in 1989 and began to redevelop her figure work from the point she had left it nearly 20 years earlier. Out of this rebirth has emerged the distinctive style she is now renowned for. Working mainly on paper with pastels, she aims for speed and economy of line to capture the inner rhythms and mobility of the human form. There is an archetypal, almost mystical feeling to the final images.

She is now widely collected and her work hangs in homes and corporate buildings all around the world. Some of her solo shows have included Newlyn Art Gallery, David Messums, Edinburgh Gallery and Thompsom Gallery. Mary is a member of Newlyn Society of Artists and the Penwith Society of Artists.
