about maggie henshall

Harbouring a strong interest in abstraction since the early years of her painting career, Maggie works outdoors, often at the cliff edge, drawing rapidly to capture the essence of tidal activity, the force of the gale, or the intensity of sunlight.

Her work is informed by the atmospheric conditions specific to the Cornish coast, and on her return to the studio she engages in a process of simplification, honing down to the essential aspects of line and evocative colour.

Born in S. Wales, Maggie studied Fine Art in Exeter and moved to Cornwall in 1988 where she now lives with her daughter.

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn, from a laughing fellow-rover, And a quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over."
