about kristin vestgard

This is the third consecutive year that Kristin has exhibited her work with Badcock’s Gallery.
Of Norwegian origin, Kristin studied for her degree at Falmouth College of Art. It was here that we first saw her work and were immediately impressed by the quirky characters and peculiar stories the paintings seemed to tell. Kristin sold all her work from her degree show, Falmouth purchasing the largest painting for their own collection. (It now hangs in the banqueting hall at Tremowe on the new campus that is part of the combined university for Cornwall.) Kristin’s exhibitions have always been received with great enthusiasm and this year’s show promises to be no different. There is maturity to Kristin’s work, a freedom and confidence has been reached. The paintings do not demand attention; they occupy their own space with a quiet dignity and beauty. They are sensitive works that tell their own stories and hold their own emotions.

Artist Statement

I work with layers of oil paint; adding wiping off, altering spaces, figures and objects and keeping marks from previous layers while creating new spaces over others. My work process is intuitive; I play with the figures, objects and their spaces, searching to attain a certain kind of communication between the elements in my paintings and myself. I deliberately cultivate a process where accidents are allowed to happen, a sort of chaos. It is about creating something unseen that is in a flux, never still. I search for a place that is neither here nor there like a vibration that occurs in between these places, a sort of recognition of moments without a place in daily life, yet is there surrounding us everyday. It is the secret lives filled up with emotions that one is unable to place anywhere, yet there is an essential nerve running through these places, and I want to capture it in my own way. To me these places tie the very fine strings between words and obvious moments, it is the moment within the moment and the strange beauty in the vital essence these places hold…for me.
