about the artist

Karl Weschke

Karl Weschke has not shown in a commercial gallery for several years.

The drawings in this show are particulary exciting as they are preliminary sketches for some of his major paintings - for example 'Europa and the Bull' and 'The Gordale Scar'.

Those familiar with his work will also recognise his Egyptian drawings and etchings.

In his book 'Karl Weschke - portrait of a painter', Jeremy Lewison writes that:

"...Weschke has a strong sense of the continuity of artistic tradition and sees himself at the end of the long line of artists since time immemorial. 'We are literally the continuation of ancient man'.

His roots are not so much in Germany as in ancient Egypt."
