"The work responds to an idea of place through both the experience of being in the landscape and the packaging and presentation of this landscape by the tourist industry. The geometric divisions in the work allude to, and are influenced by, St Ives abstraction and its constructivist underpinnings; but are derived from leaflet layouts and postcards that present the landscape as a series of views in grid form.

"Palms have become a recurrent motif and consequently there is more than a hint of the "exoticness" that they imply in the work.

"Many palms in Morrab Gardens originated in New Zealand in the 19th century, their abundance seeming to imply a former wealth concurrent with Cornwall's industrial strength at the time.
This, together with connotations of tourism, through frequent use on postcards and leaflets, has interested me in using the palm motif to suggest a social history of landscape."

Paul Ziemacki exhibits regularly at New Millenium Gallery, St Ives and has recently shown at Tate St Ives as well as Collyer-Bristow Gallery, London.
