I used to draw and paint solely from life but I started working from memory, partly because I wanted to paint people and seldom had a sitter and partly because the kind of subjects I wanted to paint were things that I’d only had a glimpse of and this added to their appeal because they held a lot of suggestions. I like a picture to remain open to interpretation. The more I used memory the more it opened up possibilities: In a memory people seem to become apart of their surroundings and some memories ferment over time and become a kind of distilled essence in which it is possible to distinguish their individual texture. A lot of my subjects are very ambiguous or else they are an accumulation of similar vague moments with a common atmosphere.
